How To Be Brave

Writer's picture: MorningstarMorningstar

It is very difficult to put the words you wrote out into the world for everyone to read. It makes you feel vulnerable. It makes you feel arrogant. It makes you feel lame. It makes you feel stupid. It makes you feel like you have wasted your time and everyone else's. But it also makes you feel warm.

You catch yourself feeling a little giddy. You smile sometimes for no reason. You dream of publishing more of your work. You feel...proud?

Then you feel silly again. Your book is probably terrible. And you need to do some marketing for it, but you aren't comfortable promoting yourself, because that's weird, right?

But finally, a six year old asks you what you do for work. And you tell them you write books. To your surprise, they ask a follow up question; Do you like it? And you smile, and say, yes, yes, you do. Because all the anxiety and insecurity doesn't change that. You still love to write.

And when that same six year old asks you if, when they grow up, you will write a book with them? Well, that's the best feeling in the world. And then they tell you how awesome it's going to be, and that it's going to be the best book ever, everyone will love it, and that you'll make a million dollars. They have no doubt, and no fear. And that's how you learn to be brave. A six year old teaches you.
