Woosh!

Writer's picture: MorningstarMorningstar

I blinked, and summer was over. What had I been doing? The days are short, the months long, but the seasons and years have passed too fast for my comfort.

We got a new dog! I picked up our third Sato rescue in July. Satos are stray dogs from Puerto Rico. They share a lot of common characteristics including their size, usually a nice 35-50 pounds. Well, our new girl, Idgie (yes, from Fried Green Tomatoes), has grown rapidly. Her feet and tail were suspiciously large when we finally saw her in person. I'm thinking she might end up in the seventy pound range.

What else did I do? I wrote another book! Like everything I have written, I go through moments of loving it and loathing it. But firsts drafts are usually pretty terrible, so I'm looking forward to seeing how I feel about it after a few revisions. I started writing two more, and we'll see whether I end up completing them or shelving them.

I spent a lot of time outside. We have sixty-five acres of woods and meadow, and it might surprise you to know it needs a lot of upkeep. Though we try and let nature do her thing, we do have to clean up fallen trees, mow the hay in the meadow, weed asparagus beds, mulch blueberry trees, etc. It takes up a lot of time, but it's enjoyable.

I usually spend a significant portion of the summer swimming, but I had a shoulder injury this year, so I haven't gotten as much water time as I would have liked. Maybe that's why I felt so frazzled this summer, swimming keeps me grounded. Here's hoping next year I can do some open water competitions again.

And now it's mid-September, so it is time to start prepping for winter. We gathered a lot of wood while working outside this summer, so there's that squared away. But there will be more things to do, and then...then it will be what I really consider my "writing season". Winter is a great time to write up here. I hate how bitterly cold it becomes, but it keeps me inside and typing. For everything there is a season...

Happy Fall, y'all!
